Holy Week

Most people I know look forward to the Holy Week because of the long weekend. They see it as a time for vacation, to go out of town and relax. They think that the Holy Week is the ultimate holiday because you can just take a leave from Monday to Wednesday and have 8 days of weekend.

But, what is the Holy Week really about? Holy Week starts with Palm Sunday and ends with Black Saturday. It is the last week of Lent and it is immediately followed by Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday marks the Savior’s entry into Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus’ Last Supper. Good Friday represents the Passion of Christ as it is also the day He dies on the cross. The Holy Week reminds for us the sacrifice made by Jesus in order for us to be saved from our sin.

Do I think of the Holy Week like the others do? The only time I have been on vacation for Holy Week was in 2010. A high school friend invited us to Ilocos Sur to join her and her family for some local election stuff. There wasn’t much realization and recollection that happened then. But, other than that, I have been a solid force during the Holy Week. I would never miss mass during the days of holy obligation especially Maundy Thursday.

I believe that this is just a yearly happening and that we (Roman Catholics) should participate in it because it is one of the greatest mysteries of our faith – a God who lived as mortal to teach us the way to eternal life and sacrificed his life to save us from sin. That is one of the ultimate sacrifices one can do. And, speaking of sacrifices, what did I sacrifice for this week? I sacrificed eating fast food meals this week.
