This is the Filipino tradition of pamamanhikan. It’s rooted from the word panhik which literally means go up the stairs.

In the olden days, the groom-to-be goes up to the parents of his future bride to ask for her hand in marriage. In the much older days, the groom offers dowry for the bride. Today, it’s just called practicality and making sure that you have the means to build your own family.

My sister and her boyfriend made the engagement official today by bringing together the two families. It was heartwarming and I was pretty assured that what these two have is for real.

Congratulations to the two of them!
