The Spectacular Now is a common high school love story. It is a boy who is the life of the party who falls in love with someone who is totally opposite his species.
Sutter is the alcoholic and party boy who is usually found having fun with friends who are the popular kind in school. Aimee, on the other hand, is like the nerdy hardworking student who is oblivious to the inner workings of Sutter’s daily life.
It was a good development of a friendship that turned out to be something more than that. The more Sutter knew about Aimee and her life, the more he was reeled into the adventure of trying to reconstruct Aimee into someone who is a regular in his life.
The book focused on the denial that Sutter is interested in Aimee. He was just saying that he’s doing it to give Aimee a little bit of liberation however their relationship became deeper than what was he meant to do. Aimee, on the other hand, turned Sutter into something without meaning to. Her natural naive demeanor made it more of an adventure for Sutter. That complicated things because the more Sutter realized the work he has got to do.
The book is a good read. You can’t wait to see what happens to Sutter. Will he be able to hold his own against Aimee or would he self-destruct and hurt Aimee in return?
